Ways to Cut Down on Sugar

Whether they will admit it or not, Americans love their sugar, consuming on average around 95 pounds a year.

As most of us know, too much added sugar can cause health issues like tooth decay, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It is also the source of empty calories, which means that it contains no nutritional value.

    How can you reduce your sugar intake you may be asking?

  • Don’t put it into food or drinks like coffee, tea, or cereal.
  • Reduce your sugary drink intake.
  • Avoid fruit juice, and if you do drink them, make sure that they are 100 percent fruit juice.
  • Avoid cereals that contain sugar or labeled frosted.
  • Cut down on store bought salad dressings, ketchup, syrups, jams, jellies, and preserves.
  • Avoid canned fruit packed in syrup.
  • Reduce consumption of processed foods.
  • Avoid cookies, cake, pies, ice cream, and sweets. Replace them with fruit, as your snack.

How Do I Conquer Food Cravings?

The best way to handle food cravings is to keep yourself very busy. How busy you may be asking? Keep yourself so busy that you don’t think about food.

Like a lot of people, I tend to eat when I am bored. I tend to notice my hunger when I am bored. However, I notice that when I am very busy, I don’t have time to think about food. Therefore, I always try to keep myself busy. I try to keep myself so busy that I don’t have time to think about food, let alone have cravings.

The second option is to eat lower calorie foods. When I crave sugar, I will eat plain yogurt with fresh fruit mixed in or eat some sweet fruit, like pineapple. This gets rid of the cravings, and my weight thanks me.

Therefore, two options for conquering food cravings are to keep yourself busy or replace the unhealthy craving with a healthier one.

As a side note, it is okay to give in to your cravings periodically as long as you keep the portion size small. Additionally don’t totally give up your favorite foods, it will do nothing but drive you batty.

Make A Daily To-Do List to Get Thinner

A good thing to do to help you stay focused on your weight loss goal is to create a daily to-do list. This simple idea can benefit you when starting on your weight loss and fitness journey.
Changing habits can be difficult. However, when you have a to-do list, you have written down what you want to do the next day.

Having healthy foods and exercise on the top of the list will help guide your choices for the day.
Keep it short and simple so that making the list does not become a chore.

The night before, write down what you are going to have for breakfast, morning snack, lunch, pre-dinner snack, dinner, and after dinner snack. Additionally, add the exercise you are going to do, along with the intensity and time you are going to give it.

Lastly, before bedtime, review your list to see how you did. Then create your list for the next day.

Remember, when you create a list, and stick to that list, and make a habit of doing it, you will be on the road to a healthier future.

A great tip for those of us with busy schedules is to plan ahead. This can be applied to both your exercising and the food you eat.

If you don’t schedule and prepare ahead, it is very easy to acquire the bad habit of eating fast food. These choices can affect your hope of losing weight. Therefore, it is important to create a meal plan ahead of time.

It is also important to put exercise into your schedule so that other things don’t get in the way. Once you start doing these things it is also important to stay with it.

Technically I Agree…

However, I’m selfish, and short-term about my weight, because I have excuses. I have lots of excuses. I have every excuse under the sun not to do what I know I need to do, and that is to lose weight.
Losing weight is for other people, not me, because I have reasons, lots of them, and I am special.

Now, it may sound ridiculous, however, that’s how many people think about losing weight, whether they are as blunt as I just was.

If this is you, it just means that you aren’t ready yet to lose weight. It is not important to you yet. Watching TV is more important than exercising. Eating seconds is more important than your health. Just remember that when you are ready, you will be able to do it. Just don’t take too long, because time is ticking.

What If I Eat Less and Still Can’t Lose Weight?

During the weight loss process, things happen, and we need to figure out why we can’t lose weight. What can we do if we are eating less and still not losing weight?

    There are a few things we can do:

  • Start exercising to increase our metabolism and burn more calories.
  • Increase the intensity and duration of our exercising to increase our metabolism and burn more calories.
  • Reduce our current portion sizes a little more. It may be that we are still eating too much.
  • Eat lower-calorie foods. It will fill us up, so we will eat less high-calorie foods.

If we can do at least one of the things listed above, we can lose the weight we desire.

Yes, you can ease up a bit. However, the weight loss fight is just beginning. It is important to remember, that your weight-loss journey is a long term one, and you need to plan for that. Instead, eat almonds, which are great for leveling the highs and lows of stress. Eat a half-cup of plain oats, which contains fiber and other ingredients that has a calming effect, and can help you sleep.

Alternately, you can go for a run, or do any high-intensity workouts to help relieve stress.

Make Time For Yourself

Life always seems to get in the way of making time for yourself. Your job, your business, your customers, your kids, your significant other, organizations you belong to, all want your time and are always pulling on you. Time for yourself does not seem to exist. This can be very stressful. However, there is an answer. Make appointments with yourself and keep those appointments. Saturday mornings are my time to go for long runs and I rarely let anything get in the way of it. However, just about every week one of my clients tries to schedule an appointment with me for Saturday morning. I let them know that on Saturday mornings I go for my long runs, and I would be happy to see them after I’m done. I have yet to have a client get mad about it. I do schedule other times for myself during the week, and if I am not firm about keeping the appointment to myself, something will get in the way.

The lesson is this, we are all busy, however we can make time for ourselves but we must be firm about not letting anyone force us to cancel the appointment we make with ourselves.

Therefore, make appointments with yourself and don’t cancel them.
