Should I Eat Slowly to Lose Weight?

Should I Eat Slowly to Lose Weight?

I grew up in a house with five kids. My mother made a limited amount of food and when it was gone, it was gone. I learned to eat really fast. Still today that habit has plagued myself and my siblings. However, to get and stay thin, I constantly have to remind myself to eat slower. Why is it a good idea to eat slower? The answer is simple. Your body takes 20 minutes to send the “full” signal to your brain. If you eat fast you will keep eating because your brain still thinks you are hungry. If you eat slower, your brain will acknowledge that you are full, before your overeat.

Therefore, the best way to lose weight is to eat slower; take breaks in-between each fork, so that you waste time until your brain catches up with your stomach.

Spot the pattern

Spot the Pattern and Lose Weight

Losing weight requires consistent and persistent action. It also requires that you spot the patterns. What things are you doing that work? What are the things you are doing that don’t work? What combinations of things that you do, give you the best results? These are your weight loss patterns, and they are important to spot. The positive patterns you want to spot and turn into habits. The negative patterns you want to spot so that you can stop doing them. A daily weight loss journal can help. Track what and how much you eat and drink. Track your exercise length and intensity. Track your weight daily. Review your journal weekly and look for patterns that you can repeat and patterns to avoid.

When I was in the weight loss process, I spotted a pattern that I needed to deal with. I noticed that during the week I would lose weight, while on the weekends my weight would go up. It was undermining my weight loss. I spotted the pattern and did something about it.

Therefore, if you want to lose weight, use patterns to guide your decisions.

Don't Count Calories

Lose Weight Without Counting Calories

Losing weight is not about counting calories. It is about getting results. It is not rocket science. Eat a little less food. Did your weight go down? Exercise a little more. Did your weight go down? Go for results. Eating lower calorie foods is a good idea. However, you don’t need to be obsessed with it, and you don’t need to count them. Learn what foods cause you to gain weight and eat them in lower portions. Learn what foods allow you to lose weight and eat them more often. Have fun with it, learn by trial and error, and lose weight for a lifetime.

Be Consistent and Lose Weight

Be Consistent

Be Consistent and Lose Weight

One of the hardest things in life is to become consistent with something. However, if we want to lose weight, we will need to be consistent with doing it. We can do this by developing good habits. Habits are things that we do consistently without thinking or sometimes even realizing it. We develop habits by doing something over time. Since bad habits are usually more fun than good habits, we tend to gravitate towards them.

If we want to be consistent with doing things that allow us to lose weight, we need to want to do them. They cannot be considered a chore. They cannot be considered work. They, in reality, should be considered fun. They should be considered a game.

Think about this, when we were a child, exercise was considered as playing so we did it a lot. As adults, we consider exercise as hard work, so we avoid it. Let’s look at exercise as play, and we will want to be consistent with it.

Let’s look at finding healthier, low-calorie, great-tasting foods as a game or a challenge, and we will want to do it consistently.

If we change the way, we look at weight loss, we will work on it consistently and develop long-term habits.

You Can Lose Weight!

Weight Loss Choices

You Can Lose Weight!

I feel that anyone can lose weight if they choose to. They just need to want it bad enough. When deciding whether to lose weight most people question their ability doing it. They question whether they are too old. They question their willpower. They question their determination. They lack confidence in themselves.

If you are one of these people, you can lose weight. You can become thinner. The question is: How bad do you want it? Your success in losing weight is proportional your desire to do it. Little or no desire will result in little or no success. Strong desire will result in big success.

Therefore, if you want to lose weight, get a strong desire to do it. You can lose weight. How bad do you want it?

We Have To Work At It To Lose Weight

Shedding weight is just not about wanting to do it, and then it happens by magic. If we want to shed weight, we have to work at it. We have to put the resources of time and energy into making it happen. We have to keep at it until we succeed.

Where we fail at losing weight is when we are afraid to do what we need to do to make it happen. When we look at the effort involved in losing weight, decide that it’s more than we want to do, and then make excuses why we can’t do it.

Most things that are truly worth having are things that we work for. Therefore, let’s work at losing weight and let’s get started today.

Those Who Lose Weight

Those Who Lose Weight

Those who lose weight do things that those who don’t lose weight can, but refuse to do. Many times I hear people say, “I can’t do that.” However, it is not that they can’t do it, but rather they don’t want to do it. They just don’t want to lose weight bad enough. They have the talk that they want to lose weight. However, they also don’t want to do anything to get there. It’s like saying that I want to go on vacation, but I do want to go in a plane, train, boat, or automobile. It’s just not going to happen. It’s just talk. Nothing happens with talk. It takes action. People that make weight loss happen, do it. They just don’t talk about it. They make it happen. They don’t complain about it. They do it. They don’t say, “I can’t do that.” They say, “I can and will do it.”

When you say you can’t do it, usually you won’t, because you gave up before you even got started. Losing weight is not about all the things you can’t do. It’s about all the things you don’t want to do anymore, so that you can do the things you want to and need to do.

Do the things that those that lose weight do and let’s get it done.

Think About Your Future and Lose Weight

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

Losing weight is about having a strong motivation to do it. One of the best ways to get a strong motivation is to think about your future. One of the best ways to do this is to ask ourselves a few questions.

On the path, we are on what is our health and life going to be like in 10 years?
How well are we going to be able to go up and down the stairs?
Think about a person that is thinner and older, that is healthy, then think about a person that is overweight and older, that is not healthy. Which one would you like to be? What are you willing to do to be like the healthy person you thought of?

Having a healthy future does not start when we have health problems. It starts now. Should you do a plan for your financial future when you retire? No, you start as early as you can. You don’t plan for a healthier future when your health diminishes. You plan for it as early as you can. This means getting our weight down as soon as we can. It means exercising as soon as we can. It means we need to start today.

It’s Possible to Lose Weight

Possible to Lose Weight

Most overweight people I talk to would rather be thin if they could. However, many of them don’t feel it’s possible. They don’t have the confidence that they can do it. This lack of confidence can have many side effects.

If you want to lose weight, and you don’t feel that it’s possible to lose weight, you won’t do what you need to do to make it happen. You will feel beaten without even starting. Therefore, why would you start? It is easier to stay overweight, and either complain about not being able to lose weight or convince yourself that you are okay with being overweight, either way you will remain overweight.

Remember, anyone can lose weight if they want to. They just need to want it bad enough to overcome their self-confidence issues. Get the confidence, get the drive and let’s get it done.

Are You Scared to Lose Weight? : Weight Loss Fear

Are You Scared to Lose Weight? : Weight Loss Fear

Growing up most of us have been programmed to fear failure. What happened when we made a mistake in school? We got an “F.”

What happened when we made a mistake at work? The fear of failure comes from the fear of what will happen if we fail. So it is better not to go after weight loss than to fail. This is the wrong attitude. We should not fear weight loss failure. We should fear not trying to lose weight at all. We should also fear procrastination. Those are the enemies of weight loss. Those are the enemies of poor health.

If we attempt to lose weight, we have a chance to lose it. It is when we do nothing that we actually fail because we will remain the same weight. However, as we age that extra weight will have a multiplying effect on our health, so that we actually don’t remain the same, we go backwards.

A man in his 70’s told me that he exercised daily because he is fighting old age with everything he has. We need to have this attitude if we want a healthy future. We should not fear losing weight. We should fear what will happen if we don’t. We should fear not doing anything to get our weight down. We should fear staying the same weight.

Let’s get rid of the fear of losing weight. Let’s change our attitude and let’s get it done.
