Delay Gratification for the Ultimate Weight Loss

Years ago, I had the instant gratification mentality, like the rest of our society. I would eat what I wanted, when I wanted, because I could. I would not deprive myself of anything when it came to food. My attitude was that food was there to be eaten, by me, and my weight reflected that attitude.

If I wanted to lose weight, I had to learn delayed gratification. Now, with that said, I want to do a short comparison of delayed gratification versus instant gratification and how if you can learn to delay gratification like I did, not only will you lose weight, but the payoff in the long run will be greater.

As humans, we are wired to chase the good feelings, which include food and eating. If you work hard, accomplish something the feeling of pride will make you feel good. We strive for that. However, we are constantly being led astray by the media to have the attitude, you work hard, and you deserve it now.

The problem with instant gratification is that it only gives short term pleasure, while increasing long term pain and stress. For example, the instant pleasure caused by eating lots of junk food daily, causes weight gain, joint problems, pain, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases, which is your long term pain.

Delayed gratification causes some short term anxiety while you are going through it, but will give you long term peace of mind with respect to your weight and overall health.

Peace of mind with respect to your weight will come when you have success at losing it, which will only come from the delayed gratification. When you have a problem, eating to make you feel a little better, for the short term is a bad idea. This will only make things worse in the long term. How about addressing the issue head on, or find another way to deal with it, like exercise instead.

Now, you might think that it may not be very pleasurable to go through it, but down the road you will have a better peace of mind because you are healthier long term.

Decide to live a health life of delayed gratification. It may be difficult in the beginning, because the instant gratification will always be there to tempt you. It will be hard because you will see it all around you, everywhere you go. Thoughts like, come on, go for it, you only live once, you deserve it, will fill your mind. Therefore, if you let an emotional decision get the best of you, the long term results will be negative, which will ultimately end in pain over the long run. Developing a life of delayed gratification is a decision that will become a habit over time. You will consciously in the beginning, have to pay attention to your decisions, but over time they will become habits.

One of the ways to stay on track is to keep asking yourself a few questions:
• Ask yourself this question, will what I am about to put in my mouth give me short term or long term pleasure?
• What are the ramifications of this decision?

Once again, keep in mind that temptation will be used against you. However, if you want the best health you can have, you need practice delayed gratification.
